Immersive Museum “Post-Impressionism”
amana was involved in the production of CG images for the Immersive Museum TOKYO 2023’s “Post-Impressionism” exhibition, which used the latest technology to present the artistic world of Van Gogh, Cézanne, and other post-Impressionist painters. “Post-Impressionism” was an art event that enabled visitors to feel as if they had entered the world of paintings rather than simply looking at paintings by expressing art with sound and images using the latest technology. What did the painter see, how did he perceive what he saw, and how did he try to express it? This event enabled visitors to have a new type of art experience by adopting the perspective of a painter rather than “painting versus viewer.”
Presenting Cézanne’s paintings, which are made geometrically, in CG
“Presenting Cézanne’s paintings, which are made geometrically, in CG
We used CG to represent post-Impressionist artists’ characteristic techniques based on the works of those who were active in a period called post-Impressionism.”
For example, in his letter to a young painter, Cezanne later wrote , “Treat nature according to the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone.” Thinking about how Cezanne depicted the presence of nature, we examined his paintings and worked on CG production while laying out images of overlapping colors in the space in an effort to reproduce his techniques.
Pursuing expressions that tell the story of painters and their works
When Van Gogh’s works were converted into CG, we added movements by expressing brush touches with dots. We also produced his works while using a vector field (which shows the direction of coordinates and the distribution of quantities in the space) to adjust the movements. They were finished in a way that enabled viewers to enjoy the three-dimensionally moving images of the swirling sky, celestial bodies, and living things that were static.
Messages of the mystery of life and the joy of birth conveyed through CG
Van Gogh’s works are often displayed in chronological order, ending with a display of dark works that express the painter’s mental state in his later years. In the latter half of the Immersive Museum, a work called “Wheatfield with Crows,” which was painted in his later years, appeared. However, after that, a production called “Almond Blossom” was intentionally staged, which was not chronological. “Almond Blossom” was painted by Van Gogh to celebrate the birth of his younger brother’s baby while he was recuperating in a mental hospital.
The transition from “Wheatfield with Crows ” to“ Almond Blossom” was a serene finish, with black birds soaring into the sky, followed by bright almond trees and flowers, conveying the mystery of life and the joy of birth.
At the venue, there was an experience booth (created by another company) where the AI Van Gogh drew a portrait for visitors, a Museum Café where visitors could enjoy the post-Impressionist worldview in a photogenic way, and a special shop stocked with original goods. amana provided stock photos of paintings.
